muscle founder cell [FBbt_00005084]

A mononucleate cell of the embryo that determines the properties of a myofiber. It arises by asymmetric division of a muscle progenitor and does not proliferate further. There is one founder cell for each embryonic/larval somatic or visceral muscle. At the beginning of the fusion process, it fuses with one fusion competent cell. Additional fusion events follow, with other fusion competent cells being recruited by the founder cell.
