lamellocyte [FBbt_00001687]

Hemocyte of the larva that is large, flat and regularly shaped and is involved encapsulation as part of the immune response. They contain short and narrow vesicles of rough endoplasmic reticulum, a well developed Golgi apparatus and some free ribosomes. Lamellocytes are not found in embryos and adults, and are rare in healthy larvae, although their differentiation can be induced by parasitoid wasp infection. Lamellocytes are involved in encapsulating and killing parasites. They differentiate both from the lymph gland and from the sessile hemocyte population. They express atilla (Cattenoz et al., 2020).

Lamellocytes have been suggested to differentiate from plasmatocytes (Stofanko et al., 2010).
