Transmedullary wide-field neuron that terminates in lobula layers 5 and 6 with bleb-type arborizations. It displays fine arborizations in medulla layers M4, M6, M8 and M9, and has bleb-type arborizations in layers M4 and M8 (Morante and Desplan, 2008; Fischbach and Dittrich, 1989. It is a cholinergic neuron (Varija Raghu et al., 2011. (Varija Raghu et al., 2011, Fischbach and Dittrich, 1989, Morante and Desplan, 2008)
The neurotransmitter was assessed by co-labelling cells with a Cha-GAL4.7.4 driver (FBtp0014830) and an anti-ChAT antibody (Varija Raghu et al., 2011. Pre- versus postsynaptic innervation judged by scoring of terminal morphology from figures in Fischbach and Dittrich, 1989 as assessed by FlyBrain Neuron DB. Split into Tm8a and Tm8b in Matsliah et al. (2024) - FBrf0260545, referred to as Tm38 and Tm36 in Nern et al. (2025) - FBrf0262545. Both subtypes identified in LM, but unclear what defining features are.
