A major layer of extensive tangential fibers in the medulla, many of which project via the posterior optic commissure to the opposite medulla. It is the 7th most lateral layer of the medulla. (Helfrich-Forster and Homberg, 1993, Ito et al., 2014, Fischbach and Dittrich, 1989)
