procuticle [FBbt_00004975]

Lamellate innermost layer of cuticle between the epicuticle and the epidermis. It consists largely of protein and chitin. Within each lamella layer, chitin-protein fibers are arranged parallel to each other and to the surface of the underlying epidermis. The lamellae themselves are arranged in a helicoid fashion. (Fristrom and Fristrom, 1993)
