mesothoracic tergotrochanter muscle
ID: FBbt_00058925
Extracoxal trochanter depressor muscle of the adult mesothoracic leg. This large muscle attaches dorsally onto the lateral scutum, adjacent to the wing base. It extends ventrally to converge to a single tendon that attaches onto a medial projection of the trochanter within the coxa. This muscle is the principal executor of the jump response. It is the largest synchronous (control) flight muscle, contracting at the onset of flight to extend the mesothoracic femur and tibia (Dickinson and Tu, 1997. It is innervated by the tergotrochanter muscle motor neuron. (Miyan and Ewing, 1985, Dickinson and Tu, 1997, Bate, 1993, Miller, 1950, King and Wyman, 1980, Hartenstein, 2006, Vigoreaux, 2006)
