Larval hypodermal muscle found in a more superficial position in the body relative to the internal muscles (Landgraf et al., 2003. These muscles require wingless signalling for their specification and, except for ventral transverse muscle 1, all express the cell adhesion molecule Connectin (Landgraf et al., 1997). They generally have a dorso-ventral (transverse) orientation (Kohsaka et al., 2012. (Landgraf et al., 2003)
