Indirect flight muscle that extends anterioposteriorly, along the full length of the thorax (Dickinson and Tu, 1997. There are six of these muscles on each side, each with a single muscle cell (Dickinson and Tu, 1997. They have anterior attachment sites across the anterior and dorsal tergum and posterior attachment sites in the postnotum (Miyan and Ewing, 1985. It functions to depress the wings by longitudinal arching of the scutum (Miller, 1950. (Miyan and Ewing, 1985, Miller, 1950, Dickinson and Tu, 1997, Bate, 1993)
