These cells vary in morphology as they ensheath and project complex and fine protrusions into the neuropil domains (Kremer et al., 2017). They mostly accompany neuronal branches, but occasionally also tracheal branches, into the neuropil (Kremer et al., 2017). Their nuclei are found at neuropil boundaries throughout the brain, not just adjacent to the cell body rind (Kremer et al., 2017).
